The
value of a fishing guide or charter.
It always surprises me when I hear of fisherman traveling into a new area
and not hiring a fishing guide or charter. If it is ocean, lake, or river
fishing the importance of hiring a local fishing guide that knows the area is
the difference between catching fish and not catching fish, or at least not as
many fish. They know the waters where the fish school, the lures and baits that
can be very geographically specific. Where the fish are at that specific time of
the year, month, and even time of day.
The average traveling fisherman, according to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. (Canadian) by a foreign angler is 7 days per year. That is if you’re an average sport fisherman, who travels out of your province, state, or country on average you will fish 7 days a year in unfamiliar waters. Even if all these 7 days where spent at the same location it would not be enough time to effectively learn enough to have a great and productive fishing trip. Then there is the trouble of packing up the tackle and gear and hoping it gets put on the same plane that you are on and arrives in a still usable condition.
The last charter I was on was with my son to Mazatlan. We were picked up at our hotel and driven to the boat; all our tackle was ready for us. We were given a hot cup of coffee as we headed out, the sun just rising over the horizon. After fishing for a while we were given lunch with a nice cold beer. No Marlin that day but a couple of Dorado in our boat and a no hassle day of fishing with great memories. We split the charter with another father and son so the total tab for my part was $300.00 plus tip. Well worth the day. So next time your on a holiday with some fishing thrown in give yourself a break and leave your gear at home.
